Will Trump Sign Executive Order for Cannabis Industry?

Inauguration Day was yesterday, and with Donald Trump now sworn into office, there is a great deal of speculation about whether or not President Trump might sign an executive order that helps the cannabis industry. We touch on the other latest headlines too, including Anne Milgram’s departure and Kentucky’s issues with cannabis and Second Amendment rights. We also look at how crypto might help influence cannabis space.

In Washington, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the USA. Expectations of seeing federal changes to cannabis legislation are high, and a viral Twitter post claimed that Donald Trump might issue an executive order that would legalize cannabis. Unfortunately, the Twitter post is debunked; an executive order can’t override the Controlled Substances Act and their ability to reschedule or deschedule.

In all, cannabis legalisation, or even other reforms such as SAFE Banking seem like an unlikely focus for Trump in the first 100 days of his presidency. We’ll explain why, and what the path forward might have to look like to see meaningful change in the near future.

With the changing administration, Anne Milgram is on her way out as head of the DEA, and currently there is no replacement on the books. Milgram was responsible for handling the rescheduling process, which has been problematic as there have been links to cannabis prohibitionist groups like SAM, and she has been accused of failing to engage meaningfully with industry partners. We’ll discuss some of her likely replacements, and what role RFK Jr. might have to play.

We will also take a look at Kentucky’s medical marijuana market, which is reloading its legislative crosshairs on federal gun restrictions. The bipartisan resolution aims to clarify that cannabis patients aren’t barred from bearing arms, challenging the Gun Control Act of 1968 in recent news.
