7. Cansortium Reports Third Quarter 2023 Results

Cansortium Inc. announced financial and operating results for the third quarter ended September 30, 2023. Unless otherwise indicated, all financial results are presented in U.S. dollars. Key financial highlights are as follows:

  • Revenue increased 14% to $25.3 million compared to $22.1 million
  • Florida revenue increased 17% to $21.3 million compared to $18.2 million
  • Adjusted gross profit was $16.1 million or 63.9% of revenue, compared to $16.7 million or 75.5% of revenue
  • Adjusted EBITDA was $8.8 million compared to $11.7 million

6. Arkansas medical Cannabis Sales Surpass $1 Billion Since 2019 Launch

Medical cannabis dispensaries in Arkansas have sold more than $1 billion in MMJ products since the program launched in 2019.Total medical marijuana sales in Arkansas since May 2019 reached $988.3 million through October, the Little Rock-based Arkansas Times reported, citing data shared by the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration (DFA).

So, “based on an estimated $772,000 in sales per day this year, the (DFA) said the number has now surpassed $1 billion,” according to the Times.

5. Medical Cannabis Doesn’t Impair Cognitive Function – Study

A new study suggest that cannabis, when used as prescribed to manage chronic health conditions, does not negatively impact cognitive function. These new findings are said to contribute a vital piece to the puzzle in assessing the safety and efficacy of medical cannabis treatment, especially with respect to cognitive function.

Researchers at Swinburne University of Technology’s Centre for Human Psychopharmacology in Australia, conducted an open-label trial, in which 40 patients with various health conditions self-administered a standard dose of prescribed medical cannabis as directed by the label.

4. Oregon’s Cannabis Farmers Seek Constitutional Protection To Ship Surplus Cannabis Out Of State

Oregon is now having difficulties making its laws and marijuana program work to the benefit of its residents. Willamette Week’s Nigel Jaquiss reports that almost every day the state is seeing new cannabis lawsuits over unpaid bills, a new claim for unpaid taxes and another company thinking about quitting.

The biggest problem in the state’s cannabis market, however, is oversupply. There are too many retailers selling marijuana, which has naturally resulted in declining prices, leading to producers’ and processors’ losing money. To make things even more complicated, the support program for drug abuse and addiction created by Measure 110 is funded with quarterly cannabis tax payments.

3. Young Adults Report ‘Significantly’ Lower Rates Of Alcohol And Tobacco Use Following Marijuana Legalization, Study Finds

Another federally funded study is suggesting that marijuana legalization may be linked to a “substitution effect,” with young adults in California “significantly” reducing their use of alcohol and cigarettes after the cannabis reform was enacted.

What’s more, the research appeared to contradict prohibitionist arguments about the potential impact of legalization, as the data also revealed no significant increase in marijuana use among young adults who were still not of age to access retail dispensaries—though there were interesting changes in certain modes of consuming cannabis following the policy change

2. Key Lawsuit Over Cannabis Adult-Use Rollout Settled In New York

In a significant development reported yesterday, the state of New York voted to settle a longstanding cannabis lawsuit, marking a pivotal moment in the contentious rollout of cannabis licenses. The decision, reached by the unanimous vote of the state’s Cannabis Control Board, signals the resolution of a protracted legal battle that has left hundreds of dispensary openings in limbo.

The catalyst for this resolution was a discrimination lawsuit filed in August by a disabled veteran from Levittown. The veteran and his fellow servicemen alleged that they were unfairly passed over in the licensing process in favor of individuals with prior convictions related to cannabis offenses. 

1. German Lawmakers Reach Agreement On Revised Marijuana Legalization Bill, With Final Vote Expected Next Week

German lawmakers have reached an agreement to revise a marijuana legalization bill, relaxing certain provisions that were challenged by cannabis reform supporters and setting the stage for a final vote in the national parliament next week.

Advocates were disappointed when a planned vote in the Bundestag was postponed last week, but there’s renewed optimism that the legislation as agreed upon by the traffic light coalition will advance, with legalization proposed to come into effect next spring.
